We see colors every day and think that we know and appreciate colors subjectively quite well. However, when the time comes to truly integrate colors in an artistic or design project, it becomes very hard to determine the best choice that will fit so many connected targets, such as the audience, the message, the matching colors, their hues, values, tints etc.
I think this article and many studies about colors give an overview and understanding of color as a science that helps to navigate through the variety of choices and select the best one. I specifically liked the definitions of colors. Seems like everyone knows them more or less, but outlining the definitions helps to logically select colors rather by just liking them.
Also there are studies that help to select combinations of colors through several schemes, such as complementary color scheme, analogous color scheme (where u select a color with its warm and cool shades), triadic color scheme (where you select 1 color and 2 shades of its complementary color), and others. I think it’s worth to look at them, since they are quite helpful. I also recommend using this link: http://colorschemedesigner.com/
